Designing a coastal modern home from start to finish is an exciting opportunity to create a serene, light-filled space that embraces its surroundings, but this new-build project came with a unique challenge: blending sleek furniture from a modern high-rise in Chicago into the airy, relaxed vibe of coastal decor. The solution was to strike the perfect balance between the two styles and create spaces that would accommodate the needs of an evolving, young family. Neutral tones and organic textures set the foundation, with crisp whites, sandy beiges, and soft blues reflecting the coastal palette. Key pieces from the client’s high-rise, like their traditional modern sectional and marble kitchen table were reimagined with complementary accents—think woven rugs, natural wood finishes, and linen curtains—to soften the look and bring a sense of warmth.

Starting with a blank slate allowed for thoughtful, future-focused design choices throughout the construction process. Family-friendly materials like durable performance fabrics and washable rugs ensured the home was practical for daily life with a young child. Playful yet subtle elements such as a cozy reading nook and a flexible play area were seamlessly integrated into the design without sacrificing the home’s sophisticated aesthetic. Plenty of windows bathed the space in natural light, while carefully selected fixtures in brushed brass and woven rattan added a coastal touch without clashing with the modern elements. The result was a harmonious blend of styles—a home that felt fresh, inviting, and perfectly suited to its coastal setting, while still honoring the client’s existing furnishings, personal taste, and the needs of a growing family.
